It was late four nights ago, and I had been out with a group of banking friends doing the Karaoke thing that’s done in Moscow, and after playing ‘Mafia’ with another crowd, I returned home, no worse for the wear at about 04:30. A friend wrote me the other day about his wife (a forensic toxicologist at a well-know university) who was working on some samples of blood and other tissue from a world famous pop singers who recently died. The interesting thing about the email was not the subject of the singer, but that of the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. Besides the work on the recently deceased, she is an expert on finding substances in very old tissue samples too. So it seems that some museum with some mummies on hand sent her a small sample of mummy tissue and asked her to see what she could determine in it. Continue reading »

Every visitor to Russia, or anyone who is close to Russians, knows about their love of the Banya. The Banya is a cross between the Scandinavian Sauna, the Arab Hammam, a social health club, and often a brothel. It is an activity that requires several hours, a good amount of spending money, some courage, and in many cases, sexual stamina. The Banya is a Russian institution with commercial banyas available anywhere, with every new home (middle-class and up) with a banya included, and most health clubs offering the banya as well.  Such was its fame that when Casanova was in Moscow, he was amazed to see the public banya, where men, women and children would all go, undress, and spend the day cleaning up and relaxing.
